Mission & goals

Learn more about our mission and the goals we're pursuing.

VPI Cameroon strives for a fair and humane treatment of prisoners, other detainees and victims of torture within the criminal justice system thereby contributing to the development of a rights culture amongst prisoners and the proper administration of criminal justice as a whole as contained in International Conventions.

Our goal is to reduce the number of human rights abuses in prisons and other detention centres by reason of fairer disciplinary and administrative procedures, greater access to justice and heightened awareness of basic rights. Some of our more specific aspirations are to:

  • Provide rehabilitative and reformatory assistance to prison inmates;

  • Stress government policy towards prison inmates;

  • Support and publicize the activities of prison inmates;

  • Carry out human rights education on the rights and plight of prison inmates especially juveniles and women;

  • Encourage legal activism in the field of penal reform;

  • Improve on the feeding, living conditions and sanitation of prison inmates;

  • Co-operate with national and international organizations and agencies which desire to initiate, promote, defend, coordinate or assist in the realization of the above objectives;

  • Support all activities which may contribute to the prevention and abolition of torture;

  • Address the mental health needs of offenders

  • and to foster alternative methods for the treatment of juvenile offenders rather than imprisonment within the criminal justice system.
